Mykonos in Greece is fast becoming one of the Mediterranean’s most influential cruise destinations, according to a new Oxford Economics report commissioned by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).

The study estimates that cruise tourism generated €201 million ($233 million)  for the island’s economy in 2024, reflecting the growing strength of this sector for Greece’s most cosmopolitan island.

With 1.3 million cruise passengers visiting as part of international itineraries, Mykonos continues to attract global travelers. Among the over 2,500 surveyed visitors, Americans made up one-third, followed by Italy, the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, and France—a clear sign of the island’s worldwide reach.

For most cruise visitors, Mykonos is a first-time discovery. Eighty percent had never visited the island before, and over half were new to Greece altogether.

This highlights the strategic importance of cruises as an entry point for future travel, as many passengers return later for longer, independent stays.

Spending by cruise passengers on Mykonos, Greece that fuels the local economy

During an average 5.6-hour stay, passengers spent around €107 ($124) each, mostly on shopping, dining, and tours. Combined, visitor and crew spending reached €126 million ($146 million), while cruise companies contributed another €33 million ($38 million) through port and service expenses.

Shopping topped the list of activities—preferred by 70 percent of travelers—followed closely by dining (69%) and organized excursions (31%), showing that visitors engage deeply with local culture and businesses.

Economic ripple effects and job creation

Cruise activity on Mykonos supported 2,930 jobs in 2024, nearly half in retail and wholesale trade, and injected €46 million ($53.4 million) in wages into the community. These numbers demonstrate how the cruise sector drives not only visitor numbers but also tangible economic benefits for local families and businesses.

Part of a global CLIA study covering ten major ports, the Oxford Economics analysis positions Mykonos as a model of how cruise tourism can stimulate sustainable economic growth across the Mediterranean.
