Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that Greece would be open to referring the issue of its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) with Turkey to the International Court but only if Turkey acknowledges that this is their sole point of contention.

Mitsotakis on Greece-Turkey security issues

Speaking to Antenna TV, Mitsotakis stressed that Greece will never discuss issues of demilitarization, “gray zones,” or sovereignty. He noted that the continued presence of these topics complicates resolving the main disagreement over maritime zone delimitation.

In addressing the presence of the Turkish research vessel Piri Reis, Mitsotakis reassured Greek citizens, stating that recent military exercises were pre-scheduled and occur annually. The Government Council for National Security (KYSEA) had discussed the ship but wasn’t overly concerned by its activities.

He emphasized that while Greece seeks open dialogue with Turkey, it will always be guided by and confident in international law. A potential meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in New York has not yet been scheduled, though both sides have expressed interest.

Mitsotakis on domestic matters

Shifting focus to domestic policy, Prime Minister Mitsotakis has outlined key priorities for Greece in the coming months:

  • Economy: Citizens can expect tax cuts and increased income from measures announced at the Thessaloniki Fair.

  • Housing: The government plans to offer rent refunds, tighten the Golden Visa program, and provide incentives to bring vacant apartments onto the rental market.

  • OPEKEPE scandal: Mitsotakis acknowledged the government’s failure to reform the farm subsidies organization, resulting in its effective dissolution and transfer to the Independent Authority for Public Revenue.

  • Immigration: A decision on whether to extend the three-month suspension of asylum procedures is expected next month.

  • Elections: The next general election is scheduled for spring 2027, with no changes to the electoral law.
