Two ships set sail from Syros, Greece to join the Global Sumud Flotilla, a multinational humanitarian effort to challenge the Israeli blockade of Gaza.
The Oxygen and the Ilektra departed from the port of Ermoupolis on Sunday, carrying humanitarian aid and a crew of thirteen people.
The mission is driven by a deep sense of solidarity with the Palestinian people and a desire to highlight the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
As crew member Angeliki Savvantoglou stated in speaking to AFP, the flotilla aims to “put pressure on our own governments also to stop collaborating with Israel and stop this genocide.” This sentiment reflects the group’s broader objective of influencing international policy and public opinion.
Challenges facing the Global Sumud Flotilla which set off from Greece
The Global Sumud Flotilla’s mission is particularly significant given the history of similar efforts. The most famous predecessor was the 2010 Gaza Freedom Flotilla, which involved a confrontation with Israeli commandos that resulted in the deaths of ten Turkish activists. That event triggered a diplomatic crisis and brought the issue of the blockade to the forefront of international discourse. Other, smaller-scale missions have also been attempted over the years, with varying degrees of success.
The current Global Sumud Flotilla, which set off from Greece, has already faced challenges. There have been at least two suspected drone attacks on its vessels while they were docked in Tunisia, suggesting that the mission is being monitored. Despite these security concerns, crew members remain steadfast, arguing that the risks they face are inconsequential when compared to the suffering of those in Gaza.
The flotilla’s departure comes at a critical time. In August, the United Nations officially declared a state of famine in and around Gaza City, a direct consequence of the war that began in October 2023. Israel‘s retaliatory offensive has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and created a severe humanitarian catastrophe.
The Global Sumud Flotilla is a tangible response to this crisis, aiming to both deliver aid and serve as a powerful symbol of international solidarity.
