Hollywood is taking another shot at reviving Scarface, with a new movie now in early development. Actor Danny Ramirez, known for his roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is attached to the project as Tony Montana, in what producers describe as a modern retelling of the iconic crime saga.
The new Scarface movie is set in Los Angeles and aims to bring a contemporary edge to a story long-rooted in pop culture.
Ramirez and producer Tom Culliver are developing the project through their independent production company, Pinstripes. Their version draws from the original 1930 novel and is separate from previous attempts, including a now-shelved reboot once backed by Universal Pictures.
The duo confirmed they have secured early development funding but stressed that production has not yet been greenlit.
A modern vision with clear intent
Culliver noted that they are approaching the story with a completely new perspective, saying they are only interested in reworking existing properties if there’s a unique vision behind it.
He criticized the industry’s tendency to produce remakes without purpose, explaining that their goal is to present a relevant and timely take on the material rather than rely on nostalgia.
The 1983 Scarface, directed by Brian De Palma and starring Al Pacino, was itself a remake of the 1932 film inspired by the same novel.

Although it opened to mixed reviews, the film eventually gained recognition as a landmark in the crime genre, and Pacino’s portrayal of Tony Montana became one of his most iconic roles.
That legacy now presents both an opportunity and a challenge for Ramirez, who could leap into leading roles with this project. He previously appeared in Top Gun: Maverick (2022) and various supporting roles in film and television.
Ramirez eyes a breakthrough role
In a recent interview with Deadline, Ramirez called the role a long-time dream and said the chance to reshape the character in a modern context feels more timely than ever.
He expressed confidence that today’s social landscape makes the story newly relevant, particularly through Montana’s journey as an immigrant trying to survive and dominate in America.
Pinstripes’ version of the film follows an earlier reboot attempt led by director Luca Guadagnino, who exited the project in 2023 without public explanation. With that effort no longer moving forward, Ramirez and Culliver’s adaptation is now the only Scarface remake currently in active development.
While the future of the new Scarface movie set in LA remains uncertain, the project has generated early interest as it looks to reinterpret a classic story for a new generation.
