Greece is preparing to launch its first dedicated dementia center, marking a historic step in the country’s response to neurodegenerative diseases. The center will be located in Attica and is designed as a model structure that connects scientific research, clinical care, and social support.
The initiative is officially scheduled to be presented in October under the umbrella of Initiative ’21, supported by leading philanthropic foundations and the National Bank of Greece.
It will bring together prominent Greek and international scientists, including distinguished members of the diaspora who have contributed significantly to dementia research and treatment.
Comprehensive design of Greece dementia facility
According to the project’s blueprint, the facility will host multiple units, including a day center for dementia patients, a prevention clinic, a training hub for professionals and caregivers, and a research division.
The goal is a holistic approach, combining advanced diagnostic tools, innovative treatment protocols, and social care in one integrated space. The coordination of the project has been undertaken by Deputy Health Minister Eirini Agapidaki, in collaboration with the Metropolis of Peristeri, which provided the site for the new institution.
Responding to growing need for dementia care in Europe
The creation of the center comes at a time when dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are affecting an increasing number of families across Greece and Europe. With its launch, the Athens metropolitan area is set to join the map of significant medical and research infrastructure in the country.
Officials hope the center will serve as a national model, offering vital knowledge, support, and services not only to patients but also to families and healthcare professionals. In doing so, Greece is positioning itself at the forefront of efforts to confront one of the most pressing public health challenges of the 21st century.
