Greece’s Deputy Minister of the Interior Konstantinos Gkioulekas formally announced the establishment of a center for studies on Alexander the Great at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. This initiative aspires to address a significant scientific deficit in Northern Greece, with the objective of the newly established research center being the undertaking of meticulous studies and rigorous research on the life and accomplishments of Alexander the Great.
The particular endeavor will encompass a comprehensive examination of his political philosophies, strategic military tactics, and the profound historical implications of his reign. Additionally, the research center will explore his enduring influence on modern society and politics, emphasizing the relevance of his legacy in contemporary contexts.
The center will be housed in the Philosophy Department of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and could be operational as early as the following academic year, pending approval by university council and academic documentation. The project’s funding will be provided by regional bodies and private sponsors, with an estimated initial cost of €50,000 (around $58,000).

During a press conference in Thessaloniki on Monday afternoon, Gkioulekas, in speaking of the new program, stated:
“We have decided that it is necessary to establish a center for the history of Alexander the Great, which is lacking in our homeland and must go ahead. The implementation of our proposal is to be overseen by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with the involvement of other academic institutions through interdisciplinary collaboration.”
This initiative boasts immense potential, as it will facilitate the convergence of students, postgraduates, and researchers, enabling them to access a comprehensive repository of material focusing on the most significant figure in Greek history: Alexander the Great.”
Gkioulekas further noted that the establishment of this chair at Aristotle University is anticipated to be funded by multiple organizations with an aim to initiate operations soon.
New working group
“It is anticipated that this chair will attract a significant number of international students, thereby playing a pivotal role in the realm of cultural diplomacy,” Gkioulekas added. “This is particularly relevant in the context of the current discourse surrounding historical facts, where their authenticity is being called into question.”

It is therefore important to acknowledge the message conveyed by this chair,” Gkioulekas said, also announcing the establishment of a working group within the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace.
The group will facilitate the submission of needs and proposals from academic institutions by relevant bodies. Additionally, a specialized team will be appointed to address the requests of foreign businesses and companies investing in the country.
