Greek scientist Eugenia Vlachou won the European Endocrine Nurse Award for 2025 which recognizes excellence in endocrinology nursing practice, nursing research, nursing leadership, nurse training and patient engagement.
The European Endocrine Nurse Award by the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) is open to all Endocrine Nurses and teams who have made a truly significant contribution to the advancement of endocrinology nursing through innovative and creative approaches to patient care and engagement, service delivery, leadership, research and training.
The 2025 Awards will be presented at the Joint Congress of ESPE and ESE 2025 “Connecting Endocrinology Across the Life Course” in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Professor Vlachou, Director of the MSc Program “Management of Chronic Diseases” at the University of West Attica said that receiving the award is an honor for her lifetime’s work.
“ESE supports the nurses because it considers they play an important role in the relationship between a patient and the medical staff,” Vlachou told Greek Reporter. “It is not just doctors that play this role. It’s a team of doctors and nurses.”
Greek scientist on the importance of hormones
Endocrinologists are medical specialists who focus on the endocrine system, which is responsible for producing and regulating hormones in the body. Hormones are chemical messengers that control a wide range of functions, including metabolism, growth, reproduction and mood.
“Our hormones play a vital role in the body, much like the heart, which is central to human health. The endocrine system drives and regulates all other systems. When our hormones are out of balance, it can lead to significant health issues,” Vlachou noted.
She added that nurses have the tools to assess the needs of the patients and to help them with endocrinological treatments. “We make sure that patients follow the instructions and don’t forget their treatment the next day. We create a motive for them to follow, and goals.”
Vlachou has made significant contributions to the field of endocrinology through both research and professional engagement. With a deep commitment to advancing medical knowledge, she has authored dozens of scientific papers that explore the complexities of the endocrine system.
These publications, featured in prominent journals, address topics ranging from hormonal imbalances and metabolic disorders to innovative approaches in managing endocrine-related diseases.
“Endocrine nurses play a crucial role not only in clinical settings but also within the broader community,” Vlachou said. “Their role extends beyond the hospital; they are equally important as community consultants, offering guidance and support.”
