A fire broke out aboard the Greek-flagged BLUE CARRIER 2 north of Mykonos on Friday morning. The incident triggered a major rescue operation in the Aegean Sea. The ship had 29 people on board. They included 28 crew members and one passenger. All were reported to be safe.
Fire Starts in Ship’s Garage
The fire broke out in a garage area of the vessel. The ship was carrying 166 trucks and 29 cars at the time. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. They are also examining whether a truck may have started the blaze. The cause has not been confirmed yet.
Coast Guard vessels, firefighting boats and tugboats rushed to the area. Other vessels also joined the operation.
Crew and Passenger Evacuated
The 29 people aboard the ship were evacuated as emergency crews worked to control the fire.
A firefighting tugboat also sailed from Piraeus to assist. Specialized Coast Guard personnel were sent to the area as a precaution.
The BLUE CARRIER 2 is a Greek-flagged Ro-Ro cargo ship. It was built in 1997 and measures about 162.5 meters in length.
Authorities continue to monitor the vessel and investigate the circumstances of the fire.
