Through a critical analysis, The Observer has announced that the Israeli escalation against Iran is dangerous.
The British newspaper points out that Iron Dome is not really impenetrable. The reason for this is that, in some areas, Iranian rockets have been able to penetrate the air defense system and do damage to the ground.
Satellite images show the impact of a rocket on the Nevatim air base in the Negev Desert, with at least some secondary explosions. The strikes are an indication that the Iranian strikes were more effective than previously thought.
Striking the Nevatim air base
Experts have identified at least 32 direct hits on the air base. None appear to have caused major damage. However, some of these strikes hit hangars housing Israel’s F-35 aircraft, one of the country’s most valuable military assets.
While these missiles do not appear to be hitting aircraft on the ground, they would have deadly results if they were fired at a city such as Tel Aviv, or if they were directed at other high-value targets, such as oil refineries near Haifa, the report said.
“The basic fact remains,” writes Decker Eveleth, an analyst and researcher on the CNE team that analyzed the video, “that Iran has demonstrated that it can hit Israel hard if it chooses. “Air bases are difficult targets. They are the kind of targets that are unlikely to cause many casualties. Iran could choose a different target, such as a densely populated base of the IDF ground forces, or a target in a civilian area. A missile strike there would cause many casualties,” he adds.
Economic Consequences
The economic consequences of a prolonged exchange of fire with Iran are another concern for Israel. “This is probably not the last time we will see a missile exchange, given that Israel seems to have already publicly committed to striking Iran,” Eveleth writes.
“My concern is that in the long run, this will be an exchange that Israel cannot afford,” he adds.
How does the Iron Dome works in practice?
Iron Dome is the most battle-tested air defense system in the world. There are Iron Dome sites throughout Israel. Each contains three or four launchers, each with 20 interceptor missiles.
The system uses radar to detect and monitor incoming rockets. It also calculates which rockets are likely to fall in populated areas. It then launches missiles against those missiles. The rest are allowed to fall in an open area.
The system was developed in the aftermath of the 2006 war in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah. Designed by Israeli companies Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries, but with U.S. assistance, the Iron Dome was developed in 2011. It was first used in combat this year, intercepting a rocket fired from Gaza.
