BlackRock and Microsoft plan to launch a $30 billion artificial intelligence investment fund to improve AI infrastructure.

The investment partnership, coined the Global AI Investment Partnership (GAIIP), comprises BlackRock, Microsoft, and the Abu-Dhabi-backed MGX. Nvidia, while not a complete general investment partner, will advise the group as it moves forward.

BlackRock’s newest acquisition, Global Infrastructure Partners, will also be part of the AI funding group. The group’s goal is to raise $30 billion to fund the building of AI data centers and energy projects designed to facilitate AI advancement. They also plan to raise another $70 billion for future debt financing.

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink spoke of the opportunity AI provides for the company. They see AI as one of their critical investments for potentially exponential growth, which is a significant reason for their involvement in the AI fund.

Fink said in a statement, “Mobilising private capital to build AI infrastructure like data centers and power will unlock a multitrillion-dollar long-term investment opportunity.”

The importance of the AI fund’s infrastructure improvements

Microsoft’s involvement doesn’t mean they will be exclusive as the fund proceeds. Microsoft and the GAIIP group aim to advance the infrastructure of AI technology for the whole industry.

“The capital spending needed for AI infrastructure and the new energy to power it goes beyond what any single company or government can finance,” said Brad Smith, the president of Microsoft.

The GAIIP will provide the largest-ever investment in AI infrastructure. The United States has been experiencing increasing energy demand over the past few years. According to the International Energy Agency, the electricity consumption worldwide for data centers could increase by more than 1,000 terawatt-hours, growing 3.4 percent annually through 2026.

The increased electricity usage means that the money provided by the GAIIP’s AI fund of which BlackRock, Microsoft, and MGX are a part, will be crucial for the future of artificial intelligence, as the technology requires sufficient infrastructure to grow.

Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, said in a statement, “Accelerated computing and generative AI are driving a growing need for AI infrastructure for the next industrial revolution.”

What this says about AI

The investment and participation of some of the world’s largest corporations are prompted by AI’s reliance on massive energy consumption due to the computing power it takes for AI to consume the necessary information for its improvement.

“There is a clear need to mobilize significant amounts of private capital to fund investments in essential infrastructure,” said Bayo Ogunlesi, CEO of BlackRock’s recent acquisition of Global Infrastructure Partners.

As artificial intelligence moves into the future, funding will be necessary to continue its advancement. AI is the technology of the future, but it needs money to get off the ground. The GAIIP group’s funding will be crucial in AI’s advancement.
