The municipality of Ilioupoli in the Central Athens regional unit has rallied its community to support 13-year-old Panagiotis, diagnosed with spastic cerebral palsy at a young age. The city aims to achieve a total fundraising goal of 88,200 euros, utilizing the carnival revenue to contribute towards Panagiotis’s operation, which needs to take place in the US.

A community united to support

Stathis Psyrropoulos, the Mayor of Ilioupoli, which is a municipality nestled in the expansive metropolitan region of Athens—has emerged as a leading force behind the ongoing fundraising campaign.

However, the true powerhouse driving this initiative is the unwavering support of the Ilioupoli community, who have passionately devoted this year’s carnival celebration to the cause, leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to aid young Panagiotis.

The Ilioupoli Carnival, which is set to take place on Sunday, March 10th, will feature performances by popular Greek artists. All revenue of this event will be donated to Panagiotis’ cause. The artists who will perform on Sunday include Zan Batist, Jackpot, Danny Darlas, Stelios Legakis, and Nansia, all of whom have offered to perform for free in support of Panagiotis.

The carnival celebrations and festivities of Ilioupoli will commence this year at Fleming Square. It will be followed by a party at the central Ethnikis Antistasis Square, with DJs Maria Papidaki and Panagiotis Nakis providing entertainment to the thousands of its people and visitors.

Speaking with state-run AMNA news agency, Mayor Psyrropoulos has called upon the citizens of Athens as well as the residents of Ilioupoli to participate in the carnival events this year and contribute to the fundraising effort.

The municipality has also been promoting the cause through various channels, including social media, banners, posters, newsletters, and local publications.

As a result of their efforts, and with the help of associations, organizations, and citizens from across Greece, nearly 78,500 euros had been already collected by Friday morning.

The mayor and the people of Ilioupoli believe that it is the obligation of the entire city to help the child, in an unprecedented gesture of solidarity and support to the family of Panagiotis.

The citizens of Ilioupoli have responded positively to the call for support, with donations constantly increasing through a transparent process managed by an organization from Thessaloniki.

As the carnival approaches, the city of Ilioupoli remains committed to its goal of raising the necessary funds for Panagiotis’ operation, showcasing the strength of a united community and the importance of social awareness and solidarity.

Where is Ilioupoli, the municipality in Athens that offers the Carnival revenue for a good cause?

Ilioupoli is a suburban municipality located a mere sic kilometres (four miles) southeast of Athens city center.
It lies at the western foot of the forested Hymettus mountain and is connected to central Athens and other suburbs of Attica by Vouliagmenis and Venizelou Avenues. Additionally, the Athens Metro Line 2 passes through the city along with several bus lines. Ilioupoli is divided into 11 quarters and has an uncommon street plan with 5 sets of concentric circular or oval streets.
The municipality was developed around 1924 when Greek refugees from Asia Minor settled there, and its name is the modern form of the ancient city of Heliopolis (the city of the sun) in Egypt.
