The History of the Villa

Perfect for large groups or families, Villa 1870 Corfu can comfortably house up to 14 people in its 6 spacious, ornate rooms. Walking through the grand home’s three floors, as well as the detached guesthouse, gives you a sense of times gone by. Visitors appreciate the mixture of vintage décor with modern comfort and amenities, as well as the fabulous view overlooking the deep blue Ionian Sea.

As the name implies, the villa was built in 1870, when Corfu’s old high-society families were at the height of their wealth. Carefully restored by the current owners in 2019, the house itself, as well as the impressive gardens, were brought back to their original splendor, with luxurious extras like a pool and outdoor gym added to the mix.

The villa was originally the property of a wealthy industrialist who moved to Corfu from the mainland opposite the island and married the daughter of a local nobleman. Decades later, it passed into the hands of a prominent local member of Corfu’s society, who used the house to stage some of the most famous Gatsby-style parties ever held on the island. His celebrations attracted people from all over Corfu and beyond to drink, dance, and party until the wee hours of the morning in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Eventually, the current owners fell in love not only with the island of Corfu, but particularly with the villa itself, and restored it to its former glory, to become a place of luxury, tranquility, and traditional Greek hospitality for all those who would visit. They wanted to bring the experience of life in this aristocratic villa to tourists from all over the world.
