The head of the Greek FBI has arrested Greek Basketball Federation President Vangelis Liolios in a historic match-fixing crackdown.

The Organized Crime Directorate launched the dramatic sweeping operation on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, executing six high-level arrest warrants. Police officially detained Vangelis Liolios alongside two federation board members and three active referees.

The suspects face severe criminal prosecution for bribery, corruption, and systemic violations of sports legislation. This explosive development represents the largest integrity crisis to hit Greek sports in decades, paralyzing the national basketball community.

Hunting corruption across fifty matches

The massive police investigation targets a vast network of alleged corruption involving Vangelis Liolios and extending across every tier of the sport. Specialized detectives are currently auditing approximately 50 matches played between 2016 and 2026.

The tainted games cover everything from local youth competitions and school championships to the elite Greek Basketball League. Investigators confirmed that the expansive probe even includes one international game played outside Greece.

The case file against Vangelis Liolios cracked wide open following detailed complaints and formal statements from eight key witnesses. Two of these individuals provided crucial inside knowledge regarding the inner workings of the match-fixing ring. While these two witnesses previously accepted bribes, they will avoid criminal charges because they voluntarily exposed the illegal network.

Uncovering nearly one million euros in cash

Raids on private residences have yielded overwhelming physical evidence linking the basketball officials to illegal gambling rings.

During a raid in a provincial region, police discovered a staggering €820,000 (~$917,000) in cash hidden inside a referee’s home. Officers also seized substantial sums of money from the other co-conspirators. The suspects failed to provide any legal explanation regarding the origin of these massive cash reserves.

Following the arrests of Vangelis Liolios along with the others, the remaining Board of Directors of the federation convened an emergency meeting to address the legal crisis. Simultaneously, the EuroLeague basketball organization moved instantly to ban the implicated Greek referees from all upcoming international fixtures. The Greek state is now preparing to implement emergency sports laws to restructure the federations’ leadership before the upcoming weekend games.
