Tripadvisor has ranked Greece as one of the best places to visit in 2023. Several locations in Greece have appeared in rankings compiled by the travel website.

Tripadvisor lauded Greece for its culture, cuisine, and natural beauty. Many locations in Greece are among the most popular holiday destinations in all of Europe.

In particular, Athens, Crete, Zakynthos, Rhodes, and Santorini performed well in the website’s rankings.

Tripadvisor Ranks Greece Highly in Traveller’s Choice 2023

“Every year, we award travelers’ favorite destinations, hotels, restaurants, and things to do around the world, based on reviews and ratings collected over the past 12 months,” the Tripadvisor website says, “So our Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best winners are decided by you: real travelers from all over, sharing real opinions and stories.”

“The 2023 winners are a celebration of everything we did last year—all the places we discovered and all the times we just said ‘yes’ to new adventures,” the travel website also said of its Traveller’s Choice 2023 awards.

Several Greek destinations were ranked highly in the award lists, reflecting the enduring appeal of Greece to visitors from across the world.

Crete

Crete was one of Greece’s big winners for Tripadvisor this year. It was ranked as the seventh most popular destination in the world and the fourth most popular destination in Europe this year.

Tripadvisor described the famous Greek island as a “Mediterranean jewel” and not without good reason. Crete is renowned for its history and culture, with iconic archaeological sites like Knossos and lesser-known historical marvels like the ruins of Aptera waiting to be discovered.

Crete’s charming urban centers are also worth a visit. Tripadvisor recommends “Chania Town’s Old Venetian Harbor or the fortresses and monasteries of Rethymnon.” There are also plenty of beaches for visitors to enjoy the sand and sea.

Crete’s culinary attractions were similarly lauded by Tripadvisor. According to the travel website, Crete is the second-best culinary destination in the world, ranked just after Rome. Crete offers a diverse range of dishes, including pastries such as bougatsa, fresh fish and seafood, a variety of meat dishes, and great vegetarian and vegan options too.

Athens

The capital of Greece also made it onto the Tripadvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards this year and ranked third in the world for culture.

Athens is steeped in thousands of years of history. Tourists can visit sites like the timeless Parthenon, one of the world’s most iconic and enduring buildings, built atop the city’s Acropolis.

However, Athens is also a vibrant modern city with many exciting contemporary developments. Several culinary tours are highly ranked on the Tripadvisor website, where recommended cocktail bars, wine-tasting venues, and clubs can be found by those looking for quality nightlife.

Zakynthos

Tripadvisor users rated Zakynthos, one of the Ionian Islands, highly for its natural beauty. Zakynthos was ranked as the seventeenth best nature destination.

The Tripadvisor description of Zakynthos reads: “The waters are bluest blue, the sands are achingly silky and smooth. Everything looks heavily Photoshopped. But that’s just Mother Nature, in all her unspoiled glory.”

After a visit to the beach, Tripadvisor recommends that visitors check out one of the island’s many music concerts or festivals where travelers are “captivated by the sights and sounds of Zakynthos performers.”

Rhodes

Rhodes made the rankings as the twelfth most popular destination in Europe. It is the largest of the Dodecanese islands and is renowned for its sandy beaches.

Anthony Quinn Bay is one of the best-known beaches and one of the most beautiful. It was named after actor Anthony Quinn, who starred in the movie The Guns of Navarone, which was shot on location in Rhodes.

For history lovers, the island also has a lot to offer. Lindos is a particularly impressive spot. During antiquity, the ancient Greeks built a temple to Athena on the Acropolis overlooking the surrounding waters and town below. The Romans, Byzantines, Knights of St. John, and Ottomans reinforced the site with fortifications in the centuries that followed.

Santorini

Last but not least is Santorini, which made it onto Tripadvisor’s Traveller’s Choice awards as Europe’s fifteenth most popular destination.

Tripadvisor has highlighted its quintessentially Greek architectural style as one of the island’s distinctive features: “candy-colored houses carved into cliffs, sapphire waters, gleaming white buildings topped with half-spheres the color of a stormy sky.”

Santorini is also famous for its black sandy beaches and volcanic landscape. Meanwhile, “Beautiful Oia is world famous for its sunsets, which seem tinted with every shade of an artist’s palette.”
