A woman who has been in a coma for the last seven months gave birth to a healthy baby girl at Delhi AIIMS trauma center, India, in late October.

Shafiya, the new mother, was 40 days pregnant when she suffered serious head injuries after falling off a motorcycle without a helmet.

Shafiya was riding on the back of the bike with her husband and her burqa reportedly became trapped in the vehicle’s rear wheel, causing it to crash. The accident, which occurred in March this year, left her with considerable head injuries.

The 23-year-old woman from the north Indian region of Uttar Pradesh was transferred to AIIMS trauma center after initial treatment in Bulandshar on April 1.

Ultrasound confirmed baby healthy and normal

Shafiya had undergone four neurosurgical operations during hospitalization and, at 18 weeks pregnant, an ultrasound confirmed that her baby was healthy.

She is still unconscious at present however and Dr. Deepak Gupta, a Neurosurgeon, says she has a 10-15 percent chance of regaining waking from her coma.

“A lot of discussion was held in her first and second trimester of pregnancy on whether we should terminate her pregnancy or continue the pregnancy as mother was still unconscious.

“As no congenital anomalies were noted in the fetus with serial level 2 ultrasound examinations, medical team suggested the option to continue pregnancy to family,” Dr. Gupta told Times of India.

Doctors recommended continuing with pregnancy

“The decision to terminate the pregnancy in view of the mother’s condition was left to the family. The family decided to continue the pregnancy subsequently. Highly uncommon.

‘I haven’t come across any such case in my 22-years neurosurgical career AIIMS,’ surgeon Dr. Gupta added.

She is presently in stable condition and now occasionally moves her head and legs since as she is no longer on ventilator support, leaving hope that she might one day get to meet her daughter.

“There is a resistance to wearing a helmet while riding pillion, especially from the Muslim and Sikh community. Women, or anyone, who rides pillion on a two-wheeler, should wear helmets.” Dr. Gupta advised.
