ECOS, the maker of safer, plant-powered laundry detergents and household cleaners, has become the first manufacturer in Illinois to receive the prestigious LEED Zero certification developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

The family-owned and operated since 1967 company earned LEED Zero Carbon, LEED Zero Energy, and LEED Zero Waste certifications for its leadership in net-zero carbon emissions, energy use, and waste generation.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world, certifying high-performance buildings and spaces and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

USGBC’s LEED Zero program verifies the achievement of net-zero goals in existing buildings through sustainability strategies such as renewable energy use, reduced and offset carbon emissions, and waste reduction of 95% or greater.

LEED Zero Carbon, Energy, and Waste certifications

The company received LEED Zero Carbon, Energy, and Waste certifications for its four U.S. manufacturing facilities, located in California, Washington, Illinois, and New Jersey.

LEED Zero is a new high bar of sustainability for ECOS, which first achieved carbon neutrality in 2013, followed by TRUE Platinum-level Zero Waste certification in 2015 and water neutrality in 2016.

ECOS a Climate Positive company

In 2021, ECOS announced that it is a Climate Positive company, offsetting 110% of its impacts in energy, carbon, and water through investments in innovative green energy and habitat restoration programs.

“ECOS is contributing to a regenerative future – one that enhances the health and wellbeing of building occupants and all of humanity,” said USGBC President & CEO Peter Templeton. “This work is more important now than it’s ever been. ECOS is demonstrating what it means to build a healthy, sustainable future.”

“For over 50 years, our mission has been to protect the health and wellness of people and our beautiful shared planet,” said Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks, president & CEO of ECOS.

“We’re thrilled to be recognized by USGBC with LEED Zero certifications for our bold actions to reduce our environmental impacts and help protect the future of our planet.”

The company also received LEED Gold certification for Existing Buildings at all four of its U.S. facilities, recognizing them for exceptional energy, water, and transportation performance; use of materials and resources; indoor environmental quality; and innovation.

Plant-powered laundry detergents and cleaners

ECOS makes plant-powered laundry detergents and cleaners that are safer for people, pets, and the planet.

Its cleaners are made in the USA using global ingredients, without dyes, formaldehyde, 1,4-dioxane, parabens, phthalates, or optical brighteners. ECOS has won many awards for its green chemistry innovations, including the U.S. EPA 2021 Safer Choice Partner of the Year award.

ECOS, Baby ECOS, ECOS Pets, and ECOS PRO cleaners are available at major club and grocery retailers and natural foods stores throughout the U.S., internationally, and online. For more information and retail locations, visit ecos.com.
