Greece recorded a total of 5,087 cases of Covid-19 on Friday, 436 fewer than the 5,523 recorded on Thursday.

The record for the highest number of coronavirus cases recorded in one day in Greece was broken on November 9, when 8,623 cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed.

Greek antivaxxers handcuff school headmaster

Five Greek anti-vaxxers were arrested after they stormed a high school in the town of Aeginio in northern Greece and put handcuffs on the headmaster, accusing him of enforcing what they declared were “unconstitutional” measures against Covid.

The unprecedented incident carried out by members of the self-proclaimed group  “Guardians of the Constitution” was quickly condemned by the Minister of Citizen Protection Takis Theodorikakos, who said “Such behaviors are provocative and unacceptable and the Police should not allow their recurrence.”

The group has created several pages on Facebook to circulate anti-vaxxer content and videos with nationalistic rhetoric.

According to reports in local media, up to a dozen members of the group confronted the headmaster at 8.00 AM on Friday morning. They handcuffed him, forcibly put him in one of their cars and brought him to the local police station. There, they asked police officers to arrest him for “violating the Greek constitution.”

Instead, the police arrested the anti-vaxxers and freed the headmaster.

According to the same reports, the group, which is mainly active in northern Greece, had recently threatened the headmaster and teaching staff who reported their harassment to the police.

Of the 702 patients intubated currently, 79.9% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their average age is 64.

The majority of those who are on ventilators in Greece, or 80.63%, are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Additionally, a total of 3,600 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.
