Record High Coronavirus Cases, Intubations in Greece Tuesday

Despite Greece’s strict national lockdown, in place since November, a record number of coronavirus cases were diagnosed in the country on Tuesday.

Greece identified a total of 3,586 cases of the coronavirus in the country on Tuesday, 1,879 more than the 1,707 cases diagnosed in the country on Monday.

A total of 699 patients with Covid-19 are intubated in Greece today, surpassing Monday‘s record of 681 patients by 18, making it the highest number of people undergoing the treatment ever recorded in the country.

A total of 64,421 coronavirus tests were conducted across the country during the day, bringing the positivity rate down to 5.56% in Greece, down from 12.12% on Monday.

Tragically, 51 people with the coronavirus passed away in the country over the past 24-hour period, which is 18 fewer than those who died with the virus on Monday.

1,779 cases of Covid-19 diagnosed Attica alone; 398 in Thessaloniki

Of the 3,586 coronavirus cases recorded in Greece in the past 24 hours, 1,779 were located in Attica, home to the Greek capital city of Athens.

Instances of the virus were particularly high in the center of the city itself, where 470 cases of Covid-19 were identified Tuesday.

Piraeus, Athens’ port city, had a total of 320 instances of the virus on Tuesday.

Tests showed that in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, a total of 398 cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed in the last 24 hours.

Total 242,347 coronavirus cases in Greece since the start of the pandemic

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 242,347 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country, including all those who have recovered from the virus.

Of the cases diagnosed in Greece in the past seven days, just 80 are associated with foreign travel and 2,965 have been linked to contact with a known case.

Of the 699 patients intubated currently, 81.3% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their average age is 68.

On Tuesday alone, 518 people with the coronavirus were admitted to hospitals in Greece.

Additionally, a total of 1,613 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The 51 new deaths recorded on Tuesday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 7,582, and 95.8% of those who have passed away with the virus were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.
