Newly released US government documents reveal several reported UFO sightings over Catalina Island, off the coast of Southern California. The records describe unexplained objects spotted by witnesses during the 1940s and 1950s. The Trump administration released the documents Friday, Oct. 23, as part of its government effort to release previously classified UFO files.
The records form part of the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE), which makes historical government reports about unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAPs, available to the public. Friday’s disclosure marked the seventh release under the initiative.
The files have renewed interest in Catalina Island, a popular tourist destination known for its beaches and Hollywood history. However, the reports do not establish that the sightings involved extraterrestrial activity.
Boy Scouts reported mysterious object in 1952
One Air Force intelligence report describes an encounter involving three Boy Scouts hiking near Camp Fox on June 25, 1952. The Scouts reported seeing a silver-colored object moving across the sky around noon. They believed it traveled faster than a conventional jet before disappearing.
The witnesses could not determine the object’s exact speed, altitude, or distance. The report noted clear weather conditions but questioned whether the Scouts had enough experience to assess what they saw. The original report also referenced sketches of the object. However, the available documentation does not establish what ultimately happened to those drawings.
A 1949 letter describes another unexplained sighting
Another government file contains a handwritten letter dated May 1, 1949, from Percy E. Mackey. Mackey reported that his wife and a schoolteacher had seen six objects moving separately across the sky on April 28. Minutes later, his wife reportedly witnessed four additional objects alongside their daughter and grandson. All appeared to travel in the same direction.

Mackey offered to provide further information, but officials concluded that the report lacked sufficient evidence for evaluation. The historical reports reflect a broader pattern of alleged UFO encounters. Similar accounts have emerged elsewhere, including reported UFO sightings in Greece during the 1950s.
Earlier UFO photograph raises questions
Catalina Island also attracted UFO reports before these encounters. According to a historical account published by The Catalina Islander, three visiting Army Air Forces veterans reported seeing six flying objects over Avalon on July 8, 1947. One witness, Alvio Russo, estimated their speed at 850 mph.
Former aerial photographer Bob Jung also claimed to have photographed an unidentified object. The Los Angeles Examiner later published an image linked to the sighting. However, the photograph appears to show a dark, star-filled sky, despite the reported daytime encounter. Its connection to the incident remains uncertain.
The government plans further document releases. Previous US intelligence investigations into UFO sightings have also examined hundreds of reports without establishing an extraterrestrial origin. The newly released Catalina Island records offer another look at historical encounters, but the objects described by witnesses remain unidentified.
