A total of 645 patients with Covid-19 are intubated in Greece on Thursday, surpassing Wednesday‘s record of 630 patients, making it the highest number of people undergoing the treatment ever recorded in the country.

Greece identified a total of 3,073 cases of the coronavirus in the country on Thursday, 392 fewer than the record-high 3,465 cases diagnosed in the country on Wednesday.

The number of patients with Covid-19 who are currently intubated in Greece reached 645 on Thursday, which represents 15 more than those recorded the day before.

A total of 53,606 coronavirus tests were conducted across the country during the day, bringing the positivity rate to 5.73% in Greece. Yesterday, Wednesday, the positivity rate was 5.44%.

Tragically, 45 people with the coronavirus passed away in the country over the past 24-hour period, which is 14 fewer than those who died with the virus on Wednesday.

Greece calls on doctors to mobilize to help struggling hospitals

The sheer number of patients undergoing the invasive treatment, which involves placing a tube in the patient’s throat to assist in breathing, has put an immense amount of pressure on Greece’s hospitals.

Due to the difficult period, in which Greece’s hospitals are stretched to their limits, Greece has appealed to doctors in the private sector to volunteer to help in the country’s public healthcare system (ESY).

Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias called on pathologists, general practitioners, lung specialists and anesthesiologists in the private sector to volunteer their services.

“With 3,465 Covid-19 infections reported (Wednesday), we can confirm we are at the toughest point of the pandemic’s development, and the ESY is on high emergency mode,” the minister said.

He added that a total of 4,648 Covid patients are currently hospitalized, 1,000 of whom were admitted this week.

He insisted, however, that hospitalized coronavirus patients would find a bed in an ICU within 24 hours.

In total, Greece has 1,400 ICU beds dedicated to Covid patients.

Kikilias appealed for more private sector doctors to help out, and warned that if there are not enough volunteers, he will ask Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to enforce mobilization.

1,524 cases of Covid-19 diagnosed Attica alone; 304 in Thessaloniki

Of the 3,073 coronavirus cases recorded in Greece in the past 24 hours, 1,524 were located in Attica, home to the Greek capital city of Athens.

Instances of the virus were particularly high in the center of the city itself, where 347 cases of Covid-19 were identified Thursday.

Piraeus, Athens’ port city, had a total of 298 instances of the virus on Thursday.

Tests showed that in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, a total of 304 cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed in the last 24 hours.

Total 230,317 coronavirus cases in Greece since the start of the pandemic

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 230,317 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country, including all those who have recovered from the virus.

Of the cases diagnosed in Greece in the past seven days, just 67 are associated with foreign travel and 1,889 have been linked to contact with a known case.

Of the 645 patients intubated currently, 82.3% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their average age is 68.

On Thursday alone, 525 people with the coronavirus were admitted to hospitals in Greece.

Additionally, a total of 1,537 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The 45 new deaths recorded on Thursday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 7,297, and 95.8% of those who have passed away with the virus were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.
