The first snow of the holiday season fell in Northern Greece late Monday night, sprinkling towns outside of Thessaloniki and Komotini with a light layer of delicate flakes.
While temperatures have begun to fall across the country, the air is particularly frosty in northern Greece. In the center of Thessaloniki, temperatures remained below five degrees Celsius (41 degrees Fahrenheit) on Monday, and were even colder in the towns outside of the city, the second largest in Greece.
These conditions were perfect for the light snowfall recorded in the town of Sochos, just a few kilometers outside of Thessaloniki.
Elsewhere in the north of the country, in Nymfaia, outside of Komotini in northeastern Greece, a flurry of snow also fell on Monday night, tying with Sochos for the first snowfall of the holiday season.
Meteorologists in Thrace, the region where Nymfaia is located, had previously predicted that the area would see light snow this week. Further snowfall and light rainstorms are predicted in northern Greece, especially its mountainous regions, on Tuesday.
