A record-breaking 562 Covid-19 patients are now intubated in Greece and 101 people suffering from the virus died on Tuesday.
A total of 2,135 cases of the coronavirus were diagnosed in Greece over the last 24 hours, indicating that the presence of the virus remains strong in the country despite the nationwide lockdown that has been in effect in Greece since early November.
The 562 patients with Covid-19 who are currently intubated in Greece broke the country’s record of 549, which was announced just yesterday, Monday.
Greece’s national health system is currently under immense strain as ICUs reached 86% capacity across the country on Monday.
In Thessaloniki, where hospitals have been inundated by patients with the virus, ICUs are functioning at an alarming 99% capacity. In Attica, home to the capital city of Athens, ICUs are currently at 81% capacity.
Considering the startling virus figures released as of late, Greek government spokesperson Stelios Petsas announced on Tuesday that the country’s original December 1 reopening date after the national lockdown is “not realistic.”
Although he did not give a firm date for the country’s reopening, Petsas did make it clear that the lifting of the current lockdown would “go gradually,” starting with schools and other “activities that have a lower epidemiological burden,” before moving on to a full reopening.
Of the 2,135 new cases announced in the country on Tuesday, just 13 were identified during testing at Greece’s points of entry.
In total, 95,137 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in Greece since the beginning of the pandemic, including all those who have recovered from the virus. Of this total, 4,840 are associated with foreign travel and 24,679 with contact with a known case.
Of the 562 intubated patients, 82% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their median age is 65, and 161 of the patients are women. A total of 490 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country.
The 101 new deaths recorded on Tuesday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 1,815. Of all those who lost their lives after suffering with the virus, a total of 721 have been women.
The median age of those who passed away with Covid-19 is 80, and 97.1% of them were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.
