The luxurious vehicles which once belonged to Greece’s former royal family are undergoing complete restoration as part of an ambitious Ministry of Culture project to revive the former summer palace in Tatoi, north of Athens.
Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni, announced recently that “The vehicles of the former Royal Family are in a new storage area now, for proper storage conditions, security and protection.”
The vehicles, including eight cars and two electric tricycles, some dating back 82 years, have recently undergone preservation work by a team of conservators from the Ministry of Culture for the removal of dust and debris after a long period of storage inside the cattle pen of the summer palace.
The vehicles of the former royal family are of particular interest as objects representing the technology of the first half of the 20th century. They are also exceptional examples of luxury cars from that era and carry significant historical importance, as they are associated with the former kings and queens of Greece and important international personalities and moments of recent Greek history.
In this context, the ministry’s Conservation Department is working on raising public awareness on the maintenance issues of technological objects, targeting both the general public and car lovers as well.
The vehicles include a 1938 Rolls-Royce Phantom III; a 1959 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith open top; a 1964 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III; a 1965 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud Drop Head Coupe; two 1952 MG TDs; two 1958 FIAT 500 Spider Elegance cars. Two Victor Electri-car tricycles complete the collection.
After restoration, the vehicles will be exhibited on the premises of the former palace estate of Tatoi, which is also undergoing a thorough restoration as well.
