Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Turkey, thanked Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on Wednesday for the Church’s support and donations to Turkish authorities and society during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Turkish President held a phone call conversation on Wednesday with Bartholomew to express his gratitude for the donations, not only from the Ecumenical Patriarchate itself, but also from the Greek institutions and community of Istanbul and the rest of Turkey.

According to a statement published on Facebook by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Turkish President also wished ”Happy Easter to the Roman Community of Turkey.”

Roman (“Rumlar” in Turkish) is the term Turkey uses to refer to those in the Greek community who are currently living in the country, a word whose roots go back to Byzantine times.
