Greece Appeals to Diaspora to Write Next Page in Nation’s History Together

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told an audience of Greek Americans on Wednesday that Athens had not forgotten the rights of the diaspora.

Addressing an audience of Greek-American community leaders at a luncheon in Washington, D,C., Mitsotakis said that the first priority of his government was for Greeks abroad to be able to vote from their place of residence.

“After 40 years of endless discussions, this government has succeeded in getting Greeks living abroad to vote from their place of residence. We needed to make compromises to achieve an increased majority but it was an important first step to further deepen relations between the diaspora and the motherland,” the PM stated.

The Greek premier also spoke of the excellent state of relations between Athens and Washington, saying “I have been watching the events in Washington for decades and for the first time I have seen such a positive climate for Greece. This is a very important opportunity that we must seize.”

“Greece is back as a serious and responsible regional power,” Mitsotakis added, while he appealed to Greek-American entrepreneurs to invest in Greece. “This government supports the investments of American businesses in Greece,” he assured the Greek-American attendees.

Addressing the diaspora more broadly, the Prime Minister stressed: “Greece needs you more than ever. But this time, in the context of a new positive start, and not just to defend our country when its interests are affected.”

In this context, he called on the diaspora “to write together this new page of Greek history.”
