A large cargo ship flying the flag of the Marshall Islands has been drifting and completely unable to maneuver off Cape Maleas in the southeastern Peloponnese since Monday morning.
The ship, which is carrying a load of iron, had left Turkey, with Argentina being its final destination.
The vessel, which has a total of 22 crew members, has completely lost its ability to be controlled due to a major issue with its rudder.
The operations room of Greece’s Shipping Ministry has been closely monitoring the situation and has already ordered two nearby vessels to assist the beleaguered ship.
The region is currently being battered by extremely strong winds that are even exceeding Level 10 on the Beaufort scale in strength.
Earlier on Monday, a rower went missing in the seas off the coast of Loutsa, Greece.
A large-scale search and rescue operation was undertaken by Greece’s Coast Guard and even some units from the Army to locate the missing rower.
Eventually, the rower was found by the crew of a Super Puma helicopter which had rushed to the scene to assist the search efforts.
The man is reported to be safe and sound at press time.
