The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia announced on Tuesday that it will build a new monastery for men on the newly-renamed ”Mount Mela” in Flowerdale, Victoria.

The move was agreed upon during a meeting on Tuesday, December 10, between His Excellency Archbishop Makarios and Onoufrios Gorozides, the president of the Australian Pontian nonprofit group known as the “Panagia Sumela” Foundation.

As the statement issued by the the Archdiocese notes, ”Gorozidis owns about 1,200 acres on Flagpole Hill in Flowerdale, which he has named “Mount Mela.” Part of this area — some 100 acres — will be donated to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese for the establishment of the new Holy Monastery.”

The area is already home to an iconostasis, which attracts thousands of Greek Orthodox pilgrims every year.
