Margaritis Schinas, the next Vice President of the European Commission, said on Thursday that a new, integrated, coherent and sustainable European policy on handling refugees and migrants will be the main priority for the von der Leyen administration.
The VP given the portfolio for ”Promoting Our European Way of Life” made his remarks in a recorded video message during the 2019 Thessaloniki Summit underway in the capital of Macedonia.
Schinas made it clear that Europe will remain a place that will welcome asylum seekers and the weak and the oppressed from around the globe.
However, the next Commission Vice President noted that whoever does not have the right, and a reason, to stay under the European flag, ”will have to return.”
Schinas also outlined the basic characteristics of the new European policy on refugees and migrants.
He noted that it should offer joint European management of the EU’s borders with third countries and better policies in integrating foreign nationals inside the EU, as well as the completion of the common European policy or asylum seekers.
Schinas will be the next representative of Greece to the European Commission and will hold the important Vice Presidential portfolio, which includes migration among other major policy areas.
