Athens to Host International Conference on Underwater Heritage

An international conference on the management of underwater cultural and natural heritage sites entitled “Dive in Blue Growth” will be held at the amphitheatre of the Acropolis Museum in Athens on October 16-18.
The conference, organised by the project BLUEMED with the support of the community Med Sustainable Tourism, is held under the auspices of President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos.
The coastal areas and the islands of the Mediterranean rely on tourism and offer significant underwater natural and cultural goods, while their geomorphological features make them vulnerable to the repercussions of extereme climate conditions.
These areas are facing a number of challenges, such as the lack of coordinated policies, methods and tools for the efficient support of sustainable economic growth, inefficient protection of underwater natural and cultural heritage and the inability to exploit it for sustainable tourism growth, as well as inadequate measures to address the repercussions of the climate crisis.
The project BLUEMED aims at the protection and preservation of submarine natural and cultural heritage in selected sites of the Mediterranean to help the coastal and insular economies to prosper by adopting a sustainable blue model for tourist growth while protecting the marine ecosystem. The project is part of the programme Interreg MED 2014-2020 that is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
The conference is an opportunity for divers-archaeologists, public organisations and local authorities, universities, researchers, NGOs, tourist organisations, scuba diving centres and scuba diving parks’ authorities to exchange views and discuss problems and solutions for the management of underwater natural and cultural heritage.
