Areopagus Supreme Court Prosecutor Vasilis Pliotas forwarded the file of the so-called ”Novartis case” to the Greek parliament on Friday, after accusations were made against former PM Alexis Tsipras and his Deputy Minister of Justice, Dimitris Papangelopoulos.
This is the second investigation connected to the Novartis case, which focuses on allegations that the involvement of politicians in Greece in the huge Novartis pharmaceutical scandal was staged by Tsipras and Papagelopoulos to sully their opponents’ reputations.
Former Conservative PM Antonis Samaras, a partner in his coalition government Evangelos Venizelos, and Ioannis Aggelis, the Attorney General of the Supreme Court, accused Papangelopoulos of having orchestrated the entire case to hurt his political opponents and to sully their political reputations.
The three figures are also accusing former Premier Tsipras of knowing everything about the alleged staging of the case.
According to the Greek constitution, when an allegation against a sitting politician is made, the case must be forwarded to Parliament before any legal action can be taken.
The Novartis case itself involves a massive network of employees of the giant Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis and politicians from many countries.
The company had allegedly been bribing doctors and politicians to promote its own drugs to markets in several countries, including Greece.
