Video Shows Violent Clashes Between Anarchists and Police in Exarcheia

A video was published on Twitter on Monday evening showing how a group of so-called anarchists attacked police officers with Molotov cocktails in a confrontation in the Exarcheia district of Athens, Greece.
The Twitter user wrote in his tweet that the video depicts a group of 20 anarchists who attacked the ”military” checkpoint of the MAT (Greece’s Riot Police Unit) with petrol bombs.

The incident took place during the early hours of Sunday, September 1, at the intersection between Tositsa Street and Trikoupi Street.
Following the new conservative government’s pledge to put an end to the nearly-lawless situation in Exarcheia, tensions have risen, with clashes breaking out on a regular basis between people who call themselves anarchists and police units.
Individuals from anarchist movements across the world have expressed their solidarity with similar-minded people in the district of Athens, and a social-media campaign has now begun to condemn the Greek police’s efforts to ”clear” the neighborhood.
Exarcheia, which at times has been characterized as an anarchist ghetto, has been seen until recently as a nearly-lawless district of Athens, where the police authorities have long struggled with asserting their power.
