Greece's Molyvos International Music Festival is More than Just Music

The fifth annual Molyvos International Music Festival, which opened on Thursday, is more than just classical music performed in a beautiful setting: it is a blending of the stunning natural environment with music and the different cultures of the people who gather to enjoy it.
Molyvos, an enchanting town on the island of Lesvos, which boasts an impressive Byzantine castle, is playing host to the Molyvos International Music Festival for the fifth consecutive year.
Musicians and audiences from all over the world gather together in this picturesque place to enjoy the best of classical music. But instead of being played in stuffy concert halls, music here is enjoyed in the casual settings of seaside esplanades and leafy parks.
This year, the festival will also travel to the Greek island of Chios, where instrumentalists will perform classical works in traditional coffee shops and even along the island’s beaches.
Impromptu events seen at the Festival, such as a world-renowned violinist playing on the beach on a Stradivarius that was made in the year 1500, are experiences that music lovers simply must experience.
From its inception, the festival has aimed at using classical music as a means to inspire, connect and unite people. Artistic directors and pianists Danae and Kiveli Dorken, who come from Molyvos, bring acclaimed musicians to their seaside town in order to make classical music accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.
Innovative workshops, music education projects and interactive activities are also part of the festival, which attracts visitors every year from all over the globe.
The Molyvos International Music Festival will run through August 19, 2019.
