Defense Minister Kammenos Sued For Homophobic Verbal Abuse

The Minister of National Defense, Panos Kammenos and Member of Parliament, Georgios Amyras

Greek Minister of National Defense Panos Kammenos was sued on Thursday by the organization “Greek Helsinki Monitor” for his alleged homophobic verbal abuse of Georgios Amyras, an M.P from the centrist party ”To Potami”.
Kammenos reportedly called Amyras ”little bride” during a heated verbal exchange in the Greek parliament on January 9. The text of the suit was released and publicized by the organization ”Racist Crime Watch”.
Talking to Kammenos, Amyras had said that ”you are the King of U-turns, because you allowed Kotzias to sign the Prespa Agreement”. Kammenos, in response, reportedly said that ”it’s clear what you are; you look like a nice little bride”.
Panayote Dimitras, the spokesperson for the “Greek Helsinki Monitor” group in Greece, sent an open letter to the Greek police department which deals with racist violence. The unit also handles complaints of homophobic crimes.
Dimitas notified them about Kammenos’ alleged verbal assault against the M.P., noting that the Minister’s remarks promote discrimination and hatred against a person due to his sexual orientation.
Georgios Amyras is a 40-year-old member of the Greek parliament and a journalist, widely known for his travel show ”Menoume Ellada” which was broadcast by the Greek state TV channel ERT between 2006 and 2013.
