Two workers were seriously injured Thursday afternoon in an explosion at Motor Oil’s refinery in Corinth, Greece, less than a week after another explosion at the facility left two people dead.
The two injured workers, aged 40 and 59, sustained multiple injuries, including burns and fractures, and were transported to Corinth General Hospital.
One of the workers was intubated, while arrangements were being made to transfer both patients to Thriasio Hospital near Athens.
Three other people sustained minor injuries and traveled to the hospital without ambulance assistance.
Explosion During Maintenance Work
According to initial reports, the explosion occurred during maintenance operations at the refinery.
Authorities are seeking the contractor responsible for an external maintenance crew that was carrying out welding work at the facility.
Witness statements are expected to be collected as investigators examine the circumstances of the explosion.
A prosecutor has ordered the Labor Inspectorate to be notified so that inspectors can conduct an on-site investigation.
Second Fatality-Linked Incident in a Week
Thursday’s explosion followed a separate incident at the same refinery on October 9, which resulted in two deaths.
The latest incident raises the number of people injured in Thursday’s explosion to five, including two with serious injuries.
