Greek businessman and former Panathinaikos FC president George Vardinogiannis, a prominent figure in Greek shipping and football, has died at the age of 90.

Vardinogiannis, widely known by his nickname “The Captain,” served as president of Panathinaikos for nearly 21 years, overseeing one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

Career in Greek Shipping

Born on April 7, 1936, in Episkopi, Rethymno, on the island of Crete, Vardinogiannis was a member of one of Greece’s richest families. He was the son of Giannis Vardinogiannis and Chrysi Theodoroulaki and one of ten children.

He graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy in Southampton, England, and pursued a career in commercial shipping.

His nickname reportedly originated from a maritime operation in which he broke the international embargo against Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, despite pursuit by the British Royal Navy.

Vardinogiannis also served two terms on the board of directors of the Union of Greek Shipowners.

Two Decades at Panathinaikos

Vardinogiannis assumed the presidency of Panathinaikos FC on July 17, 1979, when his family acquired a majority stake in the football club.

He remained president until May 2000, overseeing a period during which Panathinaikos won six Greek league championships, nine Greek Cups and three Greek Super Cups.

His tenure coincided with the club’s development into one of the dominant forces in Greek football, while the Vardinogiannis family became closely associated with its ownership and management.

He stepped down from the presidency in 2000 after almost 21 years, leaving a significant record of domestic titles.

Vardinogiannis remained one of the most recognizable figures in Greek football, alongside his longstanding involvement in the country’s shipping industry.
