A new storm system dubbed “Ypatia” began to affect regions all across Greece during the early hours of Wednesday, bringing storms, yet more snowfall, and extremely strong southerly winds to the nation.
The third major storm system to hit the country in a week is expected to raise the very low temperatures which frosted the nation for the last several days. Unfortunately, the Ypatia system will also bring heavy rain to low-lying areas.
New snowfall is also expected in the northern parts of the country, as well as in high-altitude areas of central and southern Greece.
In Thessaloniki, the weather deteriorated quickly on Wednesday morning, and municipal authorities decided to close schools across the city only a few hours after they had opened their doors.
The authorities urged parents to take care of their children’s safe transportation back home, but they said that if this is not possible, school buildings would remain open to protect the children until there is a way to safely leave the premises.
The heavy, wet snow which covered the city created a great deal of disruption in the broader metropolitan area of Thessaloniki as well.

According to the Meteo weather service of the National Observatory of Athens, the new snow is expected to fall in the central and northern parts of the country, in Thessaly, Macedonia and Thrace. The rest of the Greek mainland and the islands can expect rainfall, which will be heavy at times.
Storm ”Ypatia” hit the northern and western parts of the nation on Wednesday morning, with the rest of Greece being affected by the afternoon.
Wind velocities will reach up to 9 on the Beaufort scale, which may disrupt transportation connections between the islands and major ports on the mainland.
In Athens, the rain will begin Wednesday afternoon, and snowfall is expected on Mount Parnitha.
The weather will improve on Friday, with rain and snowfall gradually abating throughout the day.
