Mayor of Athens Says He Will Not Seek Re-election

The Mayor of Athens, Georgios Kaminis, announced on Wednesday that he will not seek re-election for a third time in the 2019 municipal elections scheduled for May.
He said that two terms are enough. “We have proven how much we respected our program and our commitments to the citizens of Athens.”
Kaminis, an American born Greek professor of constitutional law, has been the capital’s mayor since 2011.
He was elected Mayor of Athens, running as an independent, after the second round of the Greek local elections of 2010 backed by the country’s ruling Panhellenic Socialist Movement and other smaller left-of center parties.
In the second round of voting he got 52% of the vote and defeated Nikitas Kaklamanis, the center-right incumbent, becoming the first left-of-center candidate in more than two decades that wins in Athens, historically a conservative stronghold.
He was re-elected in the 2014 elections defeating SYRIZA-supported Gabriel Sakellaridis in the second round.
