Ubisoft Quebec, the studio behind the popular Assassin’s Creed Syndicate went the extra mile to ensure the authenticity of ancient Greece in the soon-to-be-released Assassin’s Creed Odyssey by depicting ancient Athens as a colorful, vibrant, and multi-faceted city.
The game takes place in ancient Greece during the Peloponnesian War.
The challenge presented to Ubisoft in recreating Athens when it was at its height of power, was how to find a way to present the ancient city as authentically as possible.
“We had to try to understand which parts of it were contemporary to our time period, because… it’s been built on by so many different civilizations over the years that it was important for us to figure out which layer of this was the correct layer for us,” Assassin’s Creed Odyssey World Director Ben Hal said to IGN, adding that Ubisoft’s was “to make sure we create the most authentic, credible Greece we can while making it beautiful and fun at the same time.”
The game has done just that by building up several districts of ancient Athens, by paying close attention to the actual history of the city.
“We broke the city down into different thematics…Greece isn’t the white and cold it’s often depicted as, it’s very colourful and vibrant and we wanted to make sure we reflected that in the world as you travel around,” Hal explained.
“A player can understand, ‘I’m now this district and what I see around me helps define where I am in the world.’ Athens being one of the oldest cities…it has a history, it has an element of chaos in the way it’s been built, so we wanted to reflect that…[but] if it’s too chaotic it’s impossible to learn, it’s impossible to navigate, it’s impossible to understand,”
Throughout Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, players will deal with an array of conflicts in the game such as democracy and tyranny, myth and science and order and chaos.
Also, while trying to present ancient Greece in the most authentic light possible, Ubisoft casted as many Greek actors as possible for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
The game recently had a playable demo at E3 2018 and will be released on October 5 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
