Street Food in Athens: More than Just Souvlaki

One of the busiest streets in the central Athens area of Monastiraki is Aiolou Street which has turned into one of the capital’s trendiest neighborhoods when it comes to street food.
The traditional souvlaki and gyro joints that have populated the area over the years are now sharing the district with — or are even being replaced by — small shops selling exotic international offerings.

A taste of the Middle East

Falafel is a traditional dish made from chickpeas. It originated in the Middle East and has conquered locals and tourists’ taste buds alike. The place is called Falafellas and is located on 51 Aiolou Street.

In Falafellas it is common to find a long line of customers, at any hour of the day, waiting to taste their favorite falafel sandwiches.

Chinese flavors

Also on Aiolou street, Chinese noodles and other dishes are available at Street Wok, where the food has a clear Eastern influence. The place also serves dishes inspired by Southeast Asian cuisine.

In the same area, Oven Sesame Athens offers a combination of local culture and Lebanese flavor. The traditional koulouri from Thessaloniki is served with a twist and a whole new shape.
