A Greek-made gum has crossed the line into medicine, with a European body confirming its myriad health-giving properties.
Chios Mastic Gum — exclusively produced on the Greek island of Chios — has received official approval as a natural remedy from the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
Its Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products unanimously categorized Chios Mastic Gum as a herbal medicine which can work on dyspeptic disorders and skin wounds.
There are already different clinical studies in progress which investigate the effect of mastic on Crohn’s disease, diabetes and cholesterol.
Chios Mastic Gum contains more 70 classified substances with beneficial properties for gastrointestinal diseases, diabetes levels and cholesterol.
Thanks to its antimicrobial action, the gum is also helpful for improving dental plaque and gum inflammation; it is also a beneficial agent due to its antioxidant activity.
The study by the Department of Research and Development of Chios Gum Mastic Growers Association was conducted under Ioanna Chinou, associate professor at the University of Athens’ School of Pharmacy.
Chios Mastic Gum is now approved as a pharmaceutical product in the EU as well as in other countries following European guidelines. As a result, its preparations can circulate all over Europe, authorized by the EMA.
There is a strong future for the gum due to the scientific findings as well as historical and folkloric references to the product.
