Measles Claims Third Greek Victim, Raising Fears

A 35-year-old woman who had been given a measles vaccine dose has become the third victim of the disease in Greece, after she died of pneumonia and respiratory failure.
To date, as reported by the Hellenic Center for Disease Control & Prevention (KΕELPNO), 1,588 cases of measles have been recorded in Greece, with a higher occurrence in the southern part of the country.
The vast majority of victims are Greek citizens, mostly young children from Roma communities and people from the general population in the 25-44 age group who are not immune to measles. Also, some non-vaccinated health professionals are among the victims.
Overall, three deaths from laboratory-confirmed cases of measles have been recorded so far in Greece.
The first victim was an 11-month-old toddler with underlying dystrophy, while the second was a 17-year-old Roma who died of encephalitis, according to KEELPNO.
One more dead of the ‘flu
Another fatality was added this week to the list of seasonal influenza victims, totalling 10 people.
Since the beginning of the seasonal epidemic period, 43 serious cases of laboratory- confirmed influenza patients were recorded, 42 of which were hospitalized in intensive care units. Of the 43 patients, only four were vaccinated.
The patients who received ICU treatment were 26 men and 16 women, aged 3 to 81 years old. With regard to the type of influenza, 21 of the cases were infected by the influenza A virus and 21 by the influenza B virus.
Of the 10 deaths that have been recorded, nine concerned patients in intensive care.
However, none of the victims had been vaccinated, although they belonged to a high-risk group. Victims were aged between 39 and 87 years old.
