At least nine policemen were slightly injured on Wednesday following clashes with dozens of angry demonstrators who pelted the police station in the Athenian western suburb of Ano Liosia, with rocks.
The demonstrators –members of the Roma community – were protesting against the police they consider responsible for the death of a 62-year-old Roma at the station.
The man was arrested earlier on Wednesday on suspicion of theft and was remanded in custody. Police say that he fell ill and an ambulance was called to transfer him to the local hospital.
Doctors were unable to revive the man who was later pronounced dead.
On hearing the news, more than 150 people attacked the police station.
The Roma community suspect that the man suffered ill-treatment by the police which resulted in his death.
Police reinforcements have been sent to Ano Liosia, where a large section of the population are Roma.
