Nicosia Condemns Turkey for Attempting to Annex Cyprus Occupied Areas

The Republic of Cyprus has criticized Turkey for attempting to annex the occupied areas of Cyprus, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides told members of the House Committee on Foreign and European Affairs.
The Foreign Ministry has prepared a paper which was circulated to all heads of Cyprus’ diplomatic missions abroad, in order to convey it to foreign governments, he said.
The document lists actions undertaken by Turkey, which show there was a process of assimilation underway.
The foreign minister said one action was the transportation of water from the mainland to the north.
Kasoulides said the water was not enough for the north and suggested the whole undertaking may be mired in corruption.
The companies that undertook the project appeared to have connections to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, and were given a monopoly to charge prices that were perhaps higher than before.
The paper also refers to the increase of the illegal settlers through granting so-called citizenship, and the increase of Islamic influence with the construction of 300 mosques and religious schools.
Kasoulides also said that the paper highlights the educational reforms which; according to him, introduce an Islamic type education in the Turkish Cypriot community.
