The first image of the special effects featured in Alexander Payne‘s “Downsizing”, in which humans have the option to shrink to five inches tall in order to help the environment and cut down on spending, has been released!

“Downsizing” is Payne’s first foray into the realm of science fiction, though it seems the film will still mostly be focused on the lives and the journeys of the main characters (played by Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig), as are most Payne movies.

Footage from the film had previously been released to a select crowd at Comic Con, but this is the first publicly released still of the effects from the movie.

Payne told Entertainment Weekly that he sees Downsizing like a version of Black Mirror, showing an altered near future for our times.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker said, “It has a lot of elements present in previous films I’ve directed, and I wouldn’t say it’s a summing-up, [and] hopefully I’m not repeating myself… It’s not for everybody, but I hope people like it.”

“Downsizing” is in the prestigious position of opening the Venice Film Festival later in August, and will be premiering in theaters across the US on December 22. The film also stars audience favorites like Neil Patrick Harris and Laura Dern.
