How Greeks Celebrate Holy Thursday, The Last Supper

On Holy Thursday, Greeks celebrate the saddest day of the Holy Week as it marks Jesus Christ’s last day on Earth.
The Greek Orthodox Church brings to life the events of the Last Supper and Jesus’ last day before he sacrificed himself for mankind on the Cross, as he wanted to dine with his disciples one last time.
The Last Supper took place in a house located in Jerusalem where Jesus took a basin of water and washed the feet of his disciples — something which was considered a slave’s job at the time. Jesus wanted to teach his disciples to be humble so that through them, mankind could learn to be humble and serve their fellow men.
Once Judas left the Last Supper, Jesus handed the Sacrament of the Eucharist to his disciples. In many areas across Greece, a representation of Jesus Christ’s actions take place on the morning of Holy Thursday.
Then, during the late evening of Holy Thursday, in many areas of Greece women gather at the Church to decorate the epitaph and mourn for Jesus as words of Gospel and mournful hymns are recited that represent the mockery and insults that people shouted out to Jesus as he was being lifted on to the Cross.
