Greek PM Tsipras Says Greece Is on Growth Path, Lashes at IMF

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Monday said that Greece has returned to growth and bailout programs and that the International Monetary Fund is putting hurdles in bailout talks.
Addressing his cabinet in the talks for the productive reconstruction strategic plan laid out by the government, the prime minister said that, “After seven years of catastrophic recession, the country has returned to growth. This dire reality obliges us to plan for the next day, because the next day is already here,” he said.

Referring to the negotiations on the bailout program review, Tsipras noted that the Greek economy survived and recovered, and that the real challenges are not determined in the meetings of technical cadres but in the real economy. Indirectly, the prime minister accused the IMF for putting illogical demands on the table in order to stall negotiations and disregarding the Greek economy achievements of the past year.
“They may want to delay negotiations on the technical level, but the river is not turning back. Greece has turned the page, the economy is faring better. The stakes for the future of our economy are not played in the meetings of technical cadres, but on the filed of the real economy. Some may remain unrepentant, but reality has surpassed them,” Tsipras said.
On the government’s growth plan, the prime minister said that, “We need an open public discourse on the next day of the country. Primarily, we need to answer the fundamental question of what the production model for the next day should be. Should it be a growth model based on domestic borrowing and private consumption? Is it our desire to return to 2009? Our goal is to converge with developed economies.”
Describing the growth model, Tsipras said that, “For us, social prosperity means redistribution of wealth and a sustainable welfare state. We should exploit the productive potential of our country using the tools available.”
Tsipras set 2021 as a milestone for the return of the country to normality, both in economic development and social indicators, saying that this is a goal that can be achieved with a  coherent development plan.
