FREE: Trailblazing Brian Eno 'The Ship' Installation at the Onassis Cultural Center

Brian Eno — prolific English musician, composer, singer, writer, visual artist and friend of Yanis Varoufakis — is presenting his “The Ship” at the Onassis Cultural Center’s Exhibition Hall. The conceptual starting point of the work is the Titanic, World War I and the constant oscillation of humanity between hubris and paranoia. It gives the seasoned art lover a chance to consider profound concepts while newbies can enjoy the exquisite architecture of the state-of-the-art facility that hosts modern cultural expression in all its forms.
The installation is a bold experiment by the ambient music guru who is best known for his pioneering work in ambient and electronic music. He describes himself as a non-musician who advocates the methodology — “theory over practice.”
Born in 1948, the crackling sounds in his ageing voice are overcome by sheer innovation. The installation on display combines music, sound and light to create a meditative and provocative experience for the listener in a work in progress. The installation has been developed to meet the specific conditions of the exhibition space and is constantly being enhanced. So dare to visit more than once to fully appreciate the work of one of the most significant personalities of the 20th and 21st century. And why not? Admission is free!
Despite the free exhibition, if you’re still looking to splurge, go ahead and have a meal at the top-floor Michelin-starred restaurant Hytra that offers spectacular views of the Acropolis and the Saronic Gulf.
Runs through to October 23. Visiting times are from noon to 9 p.m. The Onassis Cultural Center/Stegi Grammaton kai Technon is at 107-109 Syngrou Avenue. Telephone (+30) 2130178000.
