Eating as if You Live in Greece Reduces Your Chances of Heart Attack, Cambridge University Study Says

greek saladRecent research into the impact of diet and cardiovascular disease conducted by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and Cambridge University in the UK revealed that an estimated 12.5 percent of cardiovascular deaths could be prevented if people followed the Mediterranean diet.

The study was conducted by monitoring 23,902 people in the UK for 12 to 17 years and was led by Dr. Nita Forouhi from the Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit at Cambridge University.

“The benefits of the Mediterranean diet for cardiovascular health are well documented in countries of the Mediterranean region, but this is the first study to evaluate this in the UK,” Dr. Forouhni said to

mediterranean-diet-208x300The participants adhered to a 15-point score based on guidelines provided by the Mediterranean Diet Foundation for the duration of the study.

The Mediterranean diet is a staple diet for Greece and involves eating large amounts of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, extra virgin olive oil and moderate qualities of dairy, fish poultry and wine, while eating red meat sparingly.
