Sailboat Carrying 67 Migrants Found Near Greece's Cyclades Islands

REFUGEEThe Greek Coast GuardĀ found 67 migrants attempting to cross the Aegean Sea in a sailboat.
It appears to officials that the group was trying to make it all the way across the sea to to the mainland.
Usually groups of migrants attempt to reach islands closer to the Turkish coast, such as Chios, Lesbos and Samos. However, the 60 men, five women and two children were picked up 8 nautical miles northeast from the Cycladic island of Amorgos, much closer to the mainland.Ā There have been no reports on the health status of the migrants.
The group was transported to the migrant processing center on the island of Lesbos by the coast guard where they will wait until their plea for asylum is reviewed. If they are granted asylum, they will then be transferred to the mainland where the Greek government is currently scrambling to set up housing options for some 20,000 refugees already on a list.
If the new arrivals are not granted asylum by Greece they will be returned to Turkey under the EU-Turkey migration deal that was initiated in March to help curb the inflow of migrants toĀ Greece and alleviate the overcrowded camps.
Greece currently has some 57,000 migrants stuck in the country as bordering EU countryĀ FYROMĀ has closed their borders indefinitely to migrants since the beginning of 2016.
