Tourist Arrivals on Greek Island of Lesvos Drop by 65%

mytilene-tourismBased on data released by the Mytilene airport management, it appears that the island of Lesvos has suffered a great loss this touristic season. In fact, certain bodies on the island are talking about the destruction of the touristic product, which is the result of the refugee crisis.
Specifically, the data shows that the number of foreign passengers at the airport of Lesvos in July 2016, reduced by 62.8%. In total, 6,841 European tourists arrived on the island on 47 flights, while in July 2015, 18,373 people arrived on 130 flights.
In June, 4,825 tourists travelled to Lesvos, when last year’s June arrivals stood 15,026, therefore the reduction rate reached 67.89%. Overall, in the four months of this year’s tourist season (April, May, June and July) 16,745 tourists arrived on the Greek island, while last year the same number was 47,479 tourists.
It should be noted, that in the end of June 2015, given the islands’ situation and role in the refugee crisis, the governing bodies had sent a letter to the government, proposing new concrete measures to tackle the emergency situation.
